But for those who seriously practiced a musical instrument when they were young, perhaps when they played in a school orchestra or even a rock band, the musical experience can be something more. Recent research shows that a strong correlation exists between musical training for children and certain other mental abilities.

People who can keep a rhythm well have more consistent brain responses to speech, a new study finds.The ability of adolescents to keep a beat was mirrored in their brain activity while they were hearing spoken sounds, the research showed. The findings hint that musical training could improve mental skills involved in language.

First Week For 5th Grade Band
I'm so excited to see all of the excited, new musicians at Troy!
What should I do with my instrument the first week, you ask? Take it out! Show your parents how to put it together and try a few notes. Pop the DVD in your computer or player and see what is on it and how you can use it.
